NGC 4214

This reasonalby bright galaxy shines at 10m2 in Canes Venatices and holds 8.4 by 7.2 arc minutes in size. The smaller companion to the lower right is LEDA 39145 aka UGCA 276. According to SIMBAD its brightness is 18m5 (in blue) and it is only 1 arc minute small. While NGC 4214 lies in a distance of 2,94 Mpc (9,6 Mio LY), the tiny galaxy is 2,86 Mpc (9,3 Mio LY) away, which makes it possible that these two might be a couple, interacting by gravitational means and therefore be another example for an interactive pair of galaxies like NGC 4490+85. 4214 shows high activity in terms of containing huge masses of gas resulting in large star forming regions where new stars are born; this is cofirmed by a typical pattern that shows up in X-ray observations. These areas impose as light-blue dots strewn across the image. Some H2 regions are also very well visible (redish). Like many starburst-galaxy (like NGC 4449) frequently do, 4214 looks quite irregular, though the original barr-spiral structure still can be guessed in the image. |
