NGC 5985+5982+5981 Draco Triplet

This nice triplet of galaxies is located in the constellation draco. From left to right, you can see NGC 5985, 82 and 82. 85 seems to be the largest one, shining at 11m9, 5.4 arc minutes by 2.7 arc minutes. This galaxy is 120 Mio LY away and yet it is very bright, 3 times brighter than our own galxy, if we could look at our milkiy way from such a distance, equaling 70 Bio suns! Even though it moves away from earth at the tremendous speed of more than 2400 km per second, it's shape will not dramatically change within a life-span of a human. So we can take time, and zoom in to reveal some nice structures of that beautiful galaxy. NGC 5982 is 10 Mio LY more distant, hence being a bit dimmer, shining only at 12m0, measuring only 3x2.1 arc minutes. Its shape is rather unspectacular as it is catalogued as elliptic shaped galaxy. NGC 5981 is the smallest galaxy of all 3. it is much closer than its neighboughs, located only some 100 Mio LY away. Yet it is very dim and small: 13m9, 2.7 x 0.7 arc minutes, makes it almost a dwarf for my telescope. However some subtile structures can be noticed, as the resolution power of an unobstructed 9" apo is huge! Comparing it again with our own galaxy, 81 shines only at a power of 0.8 times, equaling only some 19 Bio suns... Besides those 3 you might wanna take note of all the tiny little background galaxies. These are very dim...19m and beyond, being surely further away than 1 Bio LY... |
